Sunday arrived all too soon for Nicole, and waiting for the servants to leave the Wyndham house was nerve-wracking. Though this plan was her idea, the thought of going through with it made her nauseous. What if—

She cut the thought off abruptly. No. She was not going to worry about what might happen. All that did was make her stomach even more upset. Instead, she was going to act more like Scott or Alyx and pretend this was going to be one big adventure.

“There she goes,” Scott said. “That’s the last of them...except for Weatherwax, of course.” He glanced at Nicole. “You ready for this?”

“I guess,” Nicole said. Ready as she’d ever be anyway. “Let me get to the side of the house before you ring the bell, okay? Once I’m sure you’re inside, I’ll go around to the back.” Turning to glance at Alyx, still in the backseat, Nicole added, “Remember, honk twice when I come out so Scott knows the coast is clear.”

“I know,” Alyx said, rolling her eyes. “You’ve reminded us at least a dozen times now.”

Feeling a little defensive, Nicole said, “I just want to make sure nothing goes wrong.” But maybe she was trying to compensate for her apprehension by overcontrolling everything.

“It won’t,” Alyx assured her.

Nicole didn’t share her friend’s confidence. She just hoped she could make it through without being sick. As she and Scott got out of the car, Alyx went eagerly to the front.

Scott handed her the keys. “No joyriding, now.”

“Don’t worry,” Alyx assured him as she slid behind the wheel. “I won’t let you down.”

As nonchalantly as she could, Nicole strolled to the side of the Wyndham house, trying to look as if she belonged there. Once there, she paused and bent over, pretending to tie her shoe, as she listened for Scott’s progress.

She heard a doorbell ring, then the door opened and the butler said, “Good afternoon. I’m sorry, but the Wyndhams are not at home.”

Scott’s reply was characteristically breezy. “Oh, they will be soon. We have an appointment.”

“They didn’t mention it to me,” Weatherwax said, sounding uncertain.

“Really? That’s odd,” Scott said. “Mrs. Wyndham probably just forgot to tell you. I’ve noticed she’s been a bit forgetful lately. I’ll just come in and wait.”

He must have put action to words, for his voice seemed a bit muffled as he said, “If you don’t mind, I’ll just wait in the study—”

The door closed then, muffling Scott’s voice completely. Good, the first part of the plan had worked. Now for her part. Nicole made it swiftly past the unlocked gate and into the immaculately kept backyard, then hurried across the grass to try the door she’d spotted next to the atrium. Locked.

Locked? How could it be locked? She hadn’t planned for this. Feeling nausea roil in her stomach, Nicole glanced around frantically. Aha, another entrance. She tried the door, and it was locked as well. Damn, who locked their back doors in the middle of the day?

Weatherwax, evidently. Now what? Was her plan over before it had barely begun?

No, Nicole wouldn’t let it be.
